About the Badminton Net – Tips for Buying a Net
If like many people you enjoy a game of badminton and want to own your own set it is important that you know what to look for when it comes to the different components that make up badminton equipment. Aside from the rackets, shuttles, shoes, etc. the badminton net is very important part of the game. If you intend to simply knock the shuttle back and forth the net is not going to be of that much importance to you but if you want to play a proper game of badminton you will want a net that meets certain criteria so that you can get the most out of your game and have fun playing this energetic and fun sport.
Choosing Your Badminton Net – What to Look out For
The Height of the Net
A proper badminton net should stand 5 feet and 1 inch high at the ends and an even 5 feet in the center. Nets that are affixed to the ground using stakes are better than those that are free standing and depending upon the quality some might droop in the middle. Be sure to choose a net that is of a good quality to avoid this problem. Another factor to consider when buying free standing nets is that they might not be particularly sturdy and are likely to be blown over if there is a wind or knocked over during game play. Those with posts are more secure.
The Width and Depth of the Net
Badminton nets need to be no less than 6.1 meters wide and with a depth of 2 feet and 6 inches. These are the standard measurements and if you want to play a real game of badminton it is important that the net you choose is of these measurements.
Additional Considerations
The edging or taping along the top of the badminton net needs to measure 75 mm. The meshing itself should be dark in color and the net cords should be between 15mm and 20mm (19mm is the regulation requirement).
What to Look for
When you start shopping for a badminton net you will soon discover that they are available in a number of different materials including:
- Polyethylene
- Nylon
- Vinyl
If you choose a net with posts be sure that it comes with a strong chord or cable to hold the net between the posts. Prices for the better quality nets average between $50 and $65 but many stores do not stock high quality nets. If you are determined to purchase the best it is advisable that you buy it from your local badminton club or even online. High quality nets need to be sturdy and strong. Nets that are meant more for outdoor or recreational use do not need to adhere to the strict guidelines that are mentioned above and they are a lot cheaper as well. These types of nets retail between $10 and $30 and are commonly and easily available at sporting goods stores countrywide.
The most important things to remember when buying your badminton net is that it be sturdy and doesn’t sag in the middle as this will negatively impact the quality of your game. Likewise the mesh also needs to be strong so that tears and holes are prevented.
